THIS WEEK’S FEATURES
Celebrity Cruises Expands Xpeditions Just one year after launching “Celebrity Xpeditions,” an extension of Celebrity Cruises offering elite, exotic travel experiences, the line is making good on its promise to offer one Xpeditions experience on every major cruise itinerary. “Our goal at Celebrity is to fulfill dreams, and what we’re announcing today is a compelling example of that,” said Williams. “Who hasn’t imagined visiting locations like the Great Pyramids, Easter Island, or the Matterhorn? The exotic destinations and exclusive experiences we offer through Celebrity Xpeditions are what many people only dream about.” Celebrity Xpeditions launched in January 2004 as a one-of-a-kind program offering travelers the premium experiences they expect of Celebrity – in entirely new and different venues, such as the Galapagos Islands, the Arctic, the Antarctic, and Moscow. The new Celebrity Xpeditions offerings, by cruising region, include: Alaska: A“fire and ice” experience in Vancouver, with helicopter and Zodiac tours of the Mt. Garibaldi volcano site and Howe Sound; and treks through the Alaskan wilderness in search of black bears. Bermuda: An aquatic archaeology course from the platform of a 43-foot catamaran. California Coastal/Mexican Riviera: Marlin fishing in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, with a tournament-seasoned crew. Caribbean: Underwater exploration and diving adventures culminating in National Geographic diver certification in St. Thomas, U.S.V.I. Hawaii: Heli-tours and lava tube cave explorations in Hana. Mediterranean: A four-day exploration of the Great Pyramids of Egypt with leading Egyptologists; storybook stays in Switzerland, including hikes beside the majestic Matterhorn. Panama Canal: Behind-the-scenes visits of Johnson Space Center and Houston Space Center in Texas, led by distinguished Apollo VII Astronaut Walter Cunningham. South America: The Lost City of the Incas in Machu Picchu; archaeological explorations of the Copan Ruins in Honduras, and tours of the isolated Easter Island and its mysterious Moai statues carved of volcanic rock. The new lineup joins the existing series of Celebrity Xpeditions, including cruise vacations in the enchanting Galapagos Islands onboard the 296-foot megayacht, Celebrity Xpedition; voyages in the isolated Arctic and Antarctic aboard the polar-class, 434-foot icebreaker, Kapitan Khlebnikov in partnership with Quark Expeditions; a behind-the-scenes tour of the former headquarters of the KGB and Kremlin in Moscow; a race car driving academy led by professional drivers Justin and Derek Bell in Palm Beach, Fla., and the line’s pre- and post-cruise land tours on luxurious, domed rail cars and motor coaches in Alaska and the Canadian Rockies.

Cunard Queens’ Sailpast
Last Saturday was a notable day for Cunard when Queen Mary 2 and Queen Elizabeth 2 were in their homeport of Southampton together for the first time in over a year. Carol Marlow, Cunard’s director, Europe, the Middle East and Africa referred to it as ‘an unusual occurence which will not be repeated until this time next year.’ Both ships made their first UK calls of 2005 with Queen Mary 2 returning home from a six-month Caribbean season and QE2 returning from her 23rd World Cruise. ‘QE2 continues to go from strength to strength,’ said Marlow with more people taking the full world voyage than ever before. Referring to QM2, Marlow said the Cunard flagship ‘has had a fabulous year carrying 135,000 passengers and completing 13 transatlantics.’ In the coming months that number will double to 26 voyages, interspersed with a few cruises to the Baltics and Med. Stuart Perl, Cunard marketing director, told Seatrade Insider service standards onboard QM2 have been continuously improving since last June and that passenger survey feedback reveals ‘all areas of the ship are now exceeding the benchmarks set by Cunard.’ Later in the afternoon Cunard flagship QM2 left her berth for her first westbound transatlantic crossing of 2005, and sailed past and saluted the former flagship QE2. A few minutes later QE2 slipped away from her berth and followed her much larger ‘sister’ down the Solent before heading off to the Canaries for a two week cruise. Later this year QE2 becomes the longest serving Cunard liner ever, overtaking the 36 years six months of Scythia (1921-1957).
New Ports for MSC’s Caribbean Lineup
MSC Cruises’ MSC Opera and MSC Lirica will return to Caribbean waters in 2005-06 with new itineraries that feature port calls at two destinations in the Dominican Republic. La Romana and Cayo Levantado are not often found on ‘typical’ Caribbean itineraries, noted MSC Cruises USA president and ceo Rick Sasso. Cayo Levantado is a small stretch of land off the northeast coast of the Dominican Republic in Samana Bay. Known for its white sand beaches and natural rainforest vegetation, it is also on the winter migration path for thousands of humpback whales. La Romana on the east coast offers beaches and water sports, an artists’ village, wildlife and flora reserves, horseback riding and internationally renowned golf courses. MSC Lirica departs Genoa Nov. 23 on a 17-night trans-Atlantic sailing that calls at Malaga, Funchal, Martinique, Grenada, Antigua, St. Thomas and San Juan before arriving in Fort Lauderdale Dec. 10. The ship’s inaugural calls at La Romana and Cayo Levantado will take place during the Dec. 10 seven-night Caribbean cruise, which also visits San Juan and St. Maarten. MSC Lirica will also offer 11-night ‘Deep Caribbean’ and Panama sailings, in addition to a six-night and a 10-night departure. MSC Opera departs Genoa Dec. 27 on an 18-night trans-Atlantic/New Year’s crossing, calling at Valencia, Funchal, Grenada, Margarita Island, Martinique, St. Maarten, St. Thomas and San Juan before arriving in Fort Lauderdale Jan. 14. MSC Opera will call at La Romana and Cayo Levantado 12 times in 2006, sailing a series of seven-night Eastern Caribbean itineraries roundtrip from Fort Lauderdale that also visit San Juan and St. Maarten.
